What is the Ozil goal meme?
Updated:
Short answer
The Ozil goal meme is an AI trend that replaces Mesut Özil in his 2016 Champions League winner against Ludogorets with someone else, such as a dinosaur or a grandmother. The edits took off in early October 2026, and USA Today wrote about them on 19 October. MimicZip can make one from your own photo.
The real goal
Arsenal visited Ludogorets in Sofia, Bulgaria, on 1 November 2016 for a Champions League group game. They were 2–0 down and came back to win 3–2.
In the 87th minute Mesut Özil went through on his own. He lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, left the defenders chasing him sliding past and rolled it into an empty net. The meme copies that goal.
How the AI version took off
From early October 2026, people used AI video tools to put other characters in Özil's place. A T-rex, other dinosaurs, a grandmother and game characters were the popular swaps.
Those clips racked up millions of views, and on 19 October 2026 USA Today ran a story on the trend. We do not quote exact view counts, because they move and differ from platform to platform.
What every version keeps
- A scorer who goes through on goal and beats the keeper with one calm touch.
- Defenders who slide in and miss.
- A slow, unbothered finish into an empty net.
