What is the Hit the Road Dude meme?
Updated:
Short answer
It is a meme from a TikTok clip posted on 21 August 2025: an older man in a white pickup tells an angler off, scoffs “State?” at the excuse that the pond is state property, then says “Hit the road, dude.” In October 2026 people began making AI versions with themselves, pets and characters.
The original clip
The clip shows a man in a white pickup truck by a pond. He asks who said the angler could fish there, hears “I thought this was state property”, answers “State?” in disbelief and waves the angler off. The angler stays off camera.
@bird28thegr8 posted it on TikTok on 21 August 2025. Know Your Meme records about 13.7 million views in roughly three weeks. We do not name the man in the clip, and neither does our template.
How the AI version spread
A lip-sync copy followed a few days after the original. From early October 2026, people used AI video tools to swap in other drivers: pets, game characters, new locations. The same beats stayed in every version.
Different names float around for the same clip, including State Property and Lock ’Em Up. The meaning guide lists them.
The beats every version shares
- A driver leans out of a truck window and asks who allowed this.
- An off-camera voice makes an excuse about state property.
- The driver repeats “State?” in disbelief.
- A flick of the hand and “Hit the road, dude.”
